At some point during any Ethiopian celebration, dancing will inevitably ensue. Instead of simply applauding someone you consider to be a skilled dancer, it’s cultural to slap a Birr note on his or her forehead. The denomination is up to your discretion, depending on what you think his or her dancing deserves. Once you select a denomination, you can spit on the Birr and slap it to the dancer’s forehead. Most of the time, however, the jovial soul has already worked up a thin layer of sweat with their smooth moves. In which case, no saliva is required. Simply slap a Birr on the artisan.
