Oftentimes in the Mert, my American sweet tooth would kick in and I would have a hankering for chocolate or something equally as sweet. In small town Ethiopia, sweet treats are tough to come by. In the absence of chocolate, I satiated my craving with a small cup of Loathes Shai. Loathes Shai literally means peanut tea. In English it sounds nauseating, but in Amharic it makes my mouth water. The two birr indulgence is nothing more than a four oz. cup of hot water with a few scoops of peanut butter and eight scoops of sugar mixed together. Nevertheless, in desperate times it somehow tasted just like a chocolate peanut butter cup in a glass.
